Why Do I Have No Hot Water
Posted April 26, 2021
When your water heater system starts developing problems, it can be frustrating. Many times, there is no hot water at all and you feel left stranded. There is certainly going to be an underlying cause and it can be fixed. We at My Brisbane Plumber provide total plumbing solutions in Brisbane and the surrounding areas. Find out the common causes why you may not have hot water.
1. Leaking Tank/Burst Tank
Check the tank if it is holding up water. If there is no hot water, it may mean that there is a tank leak. The tank may be damaged or there may be a leakage in the connections between the valves, the appliance, and the pipes. Check the tank compartment and if there is water in it, it may be time to replace your appliance.
2. Gas Leak/No Gas
Your hot water system may not be working because of a gas leak. If you notice something smelling like sulphur or rotten eggs, there may be leakage. You should instantly switch the appliance off and lock the gas valve if you smell the gas. This may at times happen due to a damaged gas valve. It will be best to call in the professionals after turning off the heater.
Sometimes, people turn off the gas supply and forget it. Oftentimes, the off button is defective. If this is the problem, you should switch the gas to pilot and remove the cover around the pilot light.
3. Electric Hot Water Heater Malfunction
There may be a malfunction in your electric hot water heater. You can check for a malfunction by turning off the heater and re-setting the circuit breaker. If the breaker trips, you will get hot water after an hour. If the circuit breaker keeps tripping, it means there may be a problem with your water heater. You should call an experienced professional to take care of it.
4. Failing Gas Valve
If you have a gas water heater, check its supply line. If you detect no leaks, check the gas valve.
- It should be secure and in the right place
- Make sure the gas is on
- Next check the pilot light
- Re-light the pilot light multiple times to check if stays lit
If the light doesn’t stay lit, the problem may be with the gas line. If all these tests don’t work, you should call in the experts.
5. A Malfunctioning Thermostat
If hot water is vanishing faster than it should, try resetting the thermostat. If the problem persists, raise the temperature on the thermostat. Run the hot water and check how long it lasts. If this doesn’t help, you should call for help. The thermostat may need a replacement or there may be an issue with the heater itself.
6. Tank Size Too Small
Sometimes, it may be a problem of too small a tank size. Your household may be quickly running out of hot water. This often happens when new members become part of the family. This can mean that you should get a larger hot water tank. When it comes to an upgrade, it is important to know that electric water heaters take longer to heat.
7. No Electricity/Tripped Circuit Breaker
A tripped circuit breaker or lack of electricity may be the reason you are not getting hot water.
- Firstly, check a button in the water heater that may be turned off
- Check the circuit breaker box if the breaker has tripped
- A tripped breaker may be in the opposite direction or out of line
- Turn it off and then put it back on to reset it
